Drew Ivarson and Daniel Keene to Perform at the Oratory

Saturday | November 9 | 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Poore Astronomers is a baroque duo founded by Drew Ivarson, Tenor, and Daniel Keene, Lutenist. Drew is a professional singer and composer, while Daniel is a lutenist and guitarist, in high demand as a continuo player across the Tristate area.

The title of the concert, ‘Deuocioun,’ [“Devotion’] alludes to the genesis of these works. In the Sixteenth Century, Catholicism was outlawed in England – and just being a Catholic priest present in the Realm was high treason. In this context, many English Catholics fled

to Europe and gained employment in houses, churches, and universities when the climate at home was particularly hostile. At other times, Catholics were more tolerated, and many were in high demand, perhaps because of their wide experience of the latest continental fashions in music and art.

John Dowland (1563 – 1626) was one such Catholic lutenist and composer. Born in London, or possibly Dublin, he spent his life between England, France, and Denmark. Composer of numerous madrigals, his works have delighted audiences for centuries. Thomas Campion (1567 – 1620) was a contemporary of Dowland, educated at Cambridge and France, perhaps more known for his poetry today, writing prolifically alongside his practice as a physician.

Join us for this engaging performance in the intimate candlelit setting of the Georgetown Oratory. It is the perfect way to enter into the life and times of Seventeenth-Century England.
