All Good Things

We have had quite a bit of disruption in the Oratory Church these past two weeks – and in a few ways we are not fully back to normal. Much of this is very inconvenient – both physically and spiritually. But it is important to embrace that discomfort – both physically and spiritually – in order to discern what God is doing in our midst.

Our beautiful and historic church has, in fact, never stood still. When it was built in 1881 it was about half the size it is today. There was no tower, no spire, no bell, no narthex, and no choir loft. It was a simple and humble barn. Since then, as the community has grown, so the building has developed with it.

Some time after 1922, the church was extended westwards towards the main doors. If you look downstairs in the basement you can see the original foundations for the west front, with its ascending stairs: documents lie, but archaeology never lies! Then, as the Millennium turned, our weatherproof extension was added to the front, along with the patio which we all enjoy to this day.

No doubt at both of these junctures, there was considerable disruption to normal routines and patterns of prayer. But God permits that disruption – in fact, He insists on it. As soon as we become too comfortable, He presents us with a challenge or a crisis. He does this, not because He enjoys watching us struggle, but because He knows how necessary change is to growth.

We must avoid resting upon spiritual laurels at any stage – there is much work to be done – and we are but sojourners in this life, as we are prepared for eternity by a God who leads us gently but firmly.

It is important to offer words of thanks at this moment. Our stunning new floor and beautifully refinished pews were made possible by the hard work and sacrifice of those members of our community who believe what God is doing in our midst is worth investing in. I want to thank them personally and publicly for their support and generosity.

All good things come from God as their first author – and in His wisdom He permits us to be stewards of His gifts. After we have taken care of our pressing responsibilities to our families as parents and grandparents, we have a choice as to what we do with the rest. I’m honored to serve a community for whom a choice for beauty makes a compelling argument. It is a recognition that God is working in your hearts – and for that, I thank God with all my heart.
